Safeguard dosing in bread, in case this is useful to anyone.

Sorry for this boring post...this is not the most interesting topic, but...since I've suggested pea-meds-on-bread a few times, I just thought I'd briefly report about my recent experience. I've had success with this method before, but this time was a bit of a trial.

I started with Peggy's meds on the small pieces of bread he likes (organic sprouted wheat - OK he's spoiled).
This is how many of these niblets it took to soak up 3ml Safeguard and 0.7ml Corid, left overnight to dry:

This worked for 2 days, but by day 3 he figured out that something wasn't right with his snack and it was an ordeal to get him to eat it all. So, I switched to another one of his favorites, "Golden Round" crackers. They have a conveniently flaky middle space to hold the meds, also allowed to dry overnight:



It only took him until day 2 of the crackers to know something was amiss, and I had a hard time getting him to get his day 5 meds down.

For anyone thinking about this method, I'd recommend alternating the food you use every day - if you can come up with 5 different foods, that would probably be the most effective.

When you say "dry overnight" do you mean apply the meds and dry overnight before feeding? Or dry the bread/crackers overnight before applying the meds?

I hope New 2 doesn't mind, but I have a question for Kathy about Safeguard. When I had cecal worms in my broody chickens the vet had me treat them with Safeguard. If the cecal worm eggs were carrying histomonis (blackhead), will Safeguard get rid of both the blackhead and the cecal worms? Well, ok, I know it will kill the cecal worms that carry blackhead, but will killing the cecal worms get rid of the blackhead or do you also need to treat for blackhead?

If the cecal worms are infected with blackhead then the chicken would need to be treated with metronidazole if you want that chicken to be free of blackhead. Check out this link: http://www.thepoultrysite.com/artic...-organic-poultry-blackhead-in-turkeys-part-1/

I put the meds onto the bread/cracker in the evening, and then let it dry overnight before giving it to him. If there is wet Safeguard on the bread, he can tell right away that it's something he doesn't like! (I tried this before!)

ok... I've got 1/2G of the Safe Guard mixed up and the little syringe ready.... I called my Mother-in-Law and she's going to come over in a bit to help.
hopefully I can get 90% down him without stressing him out too much. The other male may get more upset than the sick one
I took the medicine out a few minutes ago and I held out the syringe to him and at least he seamed interested, he looked it over but didn't see it to be a treat and then looked disinterested but didn't move until I tried to get a hand on him



I'll give a report back in a few hours

Good luck! Be sure to read that link on oral dosing, it's the best one I've seen.

Yes, it was a great link, I had SUCCESS . He didn't put up much of a fight and after 2-3minutes of figuring (since I don't have fingernails long enough to wedge in between the upper and lower beaks) I probably didn't get the mouth as open as in the pictures in the link I got it enough to see his tongue and part of his throat. I managed to get the mix into the corner of his mouth and after each syringe fill I let him close his beak and swallow, I put 3 syringes of the mix, 1/2 of one packet in and none came out and none went down his airway as far as I could tell.

I remembered with our kids trying to give them medicine for a sore throat we just put it in their checks and let it work it's way down.

I've got my M-I-L coming over again tomorrow for dose 2, she said the only thing he moved the whole time she was holding him was his neck.
I was right on the other male being more upset, he was sitting up in the 6ft high roost clucking almost the whole time.

Should I see any differences by tomorrow if this is the cure?

If he has worms it could take several weeks for him to get better, but keep in mind that there are many other things that could be making him sick. The white poop could be an indication that he's not drinking enough water, and that alone is very serious. They can go many days without food, but only a few days without water.
