I am in North Carolina. I've read tons and tons on the Boards. So thankful to have them to look through in an attempt to somewhat prepare for raising backyard chickens. We purchased a small coop, but I'm really thinking we will need to go to a larger one. We are getting two 5 month old buckeyes tonight. What are some things that you really wish you would have know that first night/week/month/winter?

Glad you joined us at the Backyard chickens flock. General rule of thumb is 4-5 sq.feet per bird in the coop (excluding roost and nest box space) and 10 sq.feet per bird in the outdoor run.

Getting your first chickens is sort of like having your first baby...you read all the books, get everyone's advice and then when the big moment arrives, you feel totally unprepared, lol. At least, that's how it was for me. One thing I did not know to plan for was the possibility of having chicks with special health needs so be sure to have some basic first aid items on hand in case of emergencies (things like Vaseline, Blu-Kote, electrolites, vet wrap, etc.). Better to be prepared then have something come up that requires a last minute trip to town.

Good luck with your new flock, if you have questions always feel free to ask.

Thanks for joining us!
