How long before you eat quail after you process the animals?

Hi,
I am new to raising animals for home consumption and I just cooked my first quail moments after processing the animal. However, I found the meat a bit chewy, not like chicken. I grilled it just like I do with chicken. Is this normal or should I have waited some days before cooking it?
Thanks for your input and experience.
Julio

Ive always iced my chickens at least two days after processing. My first time I tried eating it the same day and it was chewy also. The meat needs time to relax, two days or longer and it will be much more tender if the Bird is young.

Your welcome! Next year I plan on raising quail for the first time, are they easy to care for?

This is my first experience. I have had them for about a month now and one (out of 12 chicks) just started to lay eggs. I am thrilled so far and it's pretty easy and straightforward enough. I will be buying about 20 chicks this weekend! :)

What breed of quail do you have?
Jumbo Quail. Right now, 8 out of 20 are laying and I have 20 little chicks, 2/3 weeks old. It's great to see how each day there's one more hen laying. Last week I had only 2. It was so exciting to make my first salad with quail eggs in it. It may be something silly, but it's my first experience with this type of stuff and I find it exciting. :)

That sounds awesome. I'm looking at raising the same breed for meat and eggs as well. If love to here more about your experience with them so far. Where are you located? I'm in north qld, australia, so I have to make sure the animals will handle the summer heat and humidity.

Hey,
I am in Alabama, USA, very hot and humid here as well. I got mine about 2 months ago and they have been handling the hot weather fine. I am really excited as they are starting to lay eggs and they grow very fast. I originally got 25 one week old quails. I got about 12 females out of that. Then about 3 weeks ago I bought 10 more hens and 21 one week old quails.
The new hens I bought are about 10 weeks old, so they should be starting to lay. Some are already doing it. It's cool to see about 8 eggs a day and can't wait to see when I got 20, which should be pretty soon. Considering how fast they grow, they would be perfect for meat and eggs. I have no prior experience with chickens or quail, so I am pretty excited about the whole thing.
Do you have any chickens or quails right now?

Hi! I'm glad to hear your climate is similar. It sounds so exciting for you! We don't have any yet, my hubby and I actually just moved back to my parents farm (tomatoes and mangoes, with a small beef operation on the side) and have been given a house to live in but the grounds need work. I'm currently pulling down the existing coop and working on layouts and designs for a new one. I'm wanting ducks and turkeys too so I might need to expand the 'yard' into the paddock behind the house :p
