OK, so I have now joined the ranks of other chicken people who obsess about breeds and gender of chicks... well before you can really know, but oh well. Plus there are so many different breeds, and I'm just a city girl who has been around chickens for 2 days, but here goes. (All chicks have girl names because I'm an optimist). Oh, you should know that they are random chicks from the feed store that were hatched at the children's museum and then returned to the feed store at a week old. They are around 2 weeks old (I have been told, but am curious as to what you guys think) and are "mixed" so any breed guesses are approximate - I know they are mutts.

Chick #1 (Named Bertha). Black with a few white wing feathers, white feet and black legs. Slightly pink single row of peas for comb and no parting in the feathers to indicate waddles yet. Seems to be largely feathered to my untrained eye. I was told Black Astralorp but possibly Black Jersey Giant?

Chick #2 (Named Gertrude) Very friendly and small brown with darker brown stripe on back of head) Some white feathers and seems more mottled than barred. Yellow legs. No parting in the face to indicate waddles yet. Seems to be largely feathered to my untrained eye. Slightly pink single row of peas for comb. I was thinking Light Brown Leghorn.

Chick #3 (Named Edna (Gertrude is on the left)) Fuller looking and more striped than Gertrude. Legs seem to have a slight greenish tint? Black stripe on head that doesn't continue to neck. Slightly pink single row of peas comb and no parting for waddles yet. Seems to be largely feathered to my untrained eye. I was thinking Easter Egger, though a guy who works at the feed store told me Ameraucana.

Chick #4 (Named Mildred but I'm thinking Milton already). Some barring on wings. More down than all the others. Larger with larger legs than the others. Black legs with some feathers on legs. Single row of peas comb and there is already parting for waddles. Comb seems to be pinker than others. Someone told me s/he looks like a full size Cochin, but I have no idea.

Mixed pictures, from left to right: Bertha, Edna, Gertrude, Mildred.

So any opinions on age, breed or even gender are appreciated. All taken with a grain of salt, given the age of these chicks and their source, but I'm so curious! I will post more pictures as they grow.

Thanks!

Bertha is a Black Copper Marans (possible Black Marans...copper color will come in at neck later)...you can see the leg feathering on just the outside of leg down outside toe...looks to be pullet as Marans telecast pretty early...darker egg layer.

Gertrude, lay heavy odds, is a Welsummer...you can see the salmon chest coming in, which means she is a pullet and will be a darker egg layer

Edna is an Easter Egger, that's why she has green tinted legs and yes, she has a pea comb and a bit of beard and muff....NOT an Ameraucana as feed stores don't sell true SOP Ameraucana, hatcheries have Easter Eggers

Mildred...no reason to believe male yet...not a Cochin as they are fully leg feathered...you have no leg feathers that I can see on that bird in the photos, and definitely not enough for a Cochin. Might be a Blue Marans as they come in feathered legged and non-feathered legged varieties and the middle photos give it more of a grey look...if there are some leg feathers I think Marans either Black or Blue...and that is a single comb not a pea on that one....and that is not barring...barring is white stripes or at least strong stripes...you just have some feather tips that are morphing in color as down changes to adult feathers. This bird may change in color a bit before its adult feathers...Blues can have some pretty variegation to their feathers.

My thoughts.

I'll def go with the first one being either a French Black Copper or Black Maran. I've a young Chick here that's one and its literally identical.

The others I'm not sure about.

These are a few pictures of all of them that I took today... Is Mildred's comb getting pink ( she is the black one at the front of the first 2 pics, and at the back of the last 3 pics)? She may be a little older than the others... She is also getting copper all throughout her wing feathers. I don't know if that means anything. I really hope I got all pullets because I really like these little chicks

Wow, that first one, Bertha, looks like my australorp when she was little but I do have to agree with maran. You'll know for sure when she lays.
