In the Brooder
OK, so I have now joined the ranks of other chicken people who obsess about breeds and gender of chicks... well before you can really know, but oh well. Plus there are so many different breeds, and I'm just a city girl who has been around chickens for 2 days, but here goes. (All chicks have girl names because I'm an optimist). Oh, you should know that they are random chicks from the feed store that were hatched at the children's museum and then returned to the feed store at a week old. They are around 2 weeks old (I have been told, but am curious as to what you guys think) and are "mixed" so any breed guesses are approximate - I know they are mutts.
Chick #1 (Named Bertha). Black with a few white wing feathers, white feet and black legs. Slightly pink single row of peas for comb and no parting in the feathers to indicate waddles yet. Seems to be largely feathered to my untrained eye. I was told Black Astralorp but possibly Black Jersey Giant?
Chick #2 (Named Gertrude) Very friendly and small brown with darker brown stripe on back of head) Some white feathers and seems more mottled than barred. Yellow legs. No parting in the face to indicate waddles yet. Seems to be largely feathered to my untrained eye. Slightly pink single row of peas for comb. I was thinking Light Brown Leghorn.
Chick #3 (Named Edna (Gertrude is on the left)) Fuller looking and more striped than Gertrude. Legs seem to have a slight greenish tint? Black stripe on head that doesn't continue to neck. Slightly pink single row of peas comb and no parting for waddles yet. Seems to be largely feathered to my untrained eye. I was thinking Easter Egger, though a guy who works at the feed store told me Ameraucana.
Chick #4 (Named Mildred but I'm thinking Milton already). Some barring on wings. More down than all the others. Larger with larger legs than the others. Black legs with some feathers on legs. Single row of peas comb and there is already parting for waddles. Comb seems to be pinker than others. Someone told me s/he looks like a full size Cochin, but I have no idea.
Mixed pictures, from left to right: Bertha, Edna, Gertrude, Mildred.
So any opinions on age, breed or even gender are appreciated. All taken with a grain of salt, given the age of these chicks and their source, but I'm so curious! I will post more pictures as they grow.
Thanks!
