Any guesses as to breed? Gender?

The fact that it's your free chick means it's quite likely male, but the leg feathering is present on both genders (not sex linked at all). Some cuckoo Marans have feathered legs, some don't. the only other barred breed with feathered legs that comes to mind is a Cochin, and this is not a Cochin. Pretty safe to say cuckoo Marans.

I'm not seeing any feathering on the legs on my monitor, but since everyone else, including the owner, seems to see them, I'll take your word for it. That being the case I agree that it's a Cuckoo Marans and I need to get the resolution and color adjusted on my monitor (or else I need an eye adjustment).)

My mystery chick is now about 2 weeks old. Here are some updated photos, sorry about that bad lighting. I'm hoping it's a girl and a Barred Rock. Any new guess? Or anyone sure on previous guesses? I'd love to hear your thoughts. It's such a sweet chick.

I'm thinking it's a Cuckoo Marans. It could be a hatchery quality Barred Rock, but the legs look more whitish or grayish to me than the yellow legs of a Barred Rock.

Here are my golden cuckoo marans chicks. Yours has the grayish barring of a cuckoo, not the distinct of a rock. When I saw the chick picture, I immediately thought marans.

Any new pics? It looks a lot like my cuckoo marans also. What color is the front of the legs? Are the front sides darker than the back?
