Sometimes in a small flock with no roosters a hen might take on the masculine role of crowing. Sometimes it means she's getting on in years.:cd

One of my hens crows. I thought I was making it up, lol. I don't know what her deal is, but she's the clear top hen in the bunch, she keeps the other girls in line. I think she looks like a rooster, too. But she lays eggs, so she's a she.
