Hello! We have 3 baby chicks (the fourth passed away). They are frizzles and Cochins. All black. They are 3 weeks old and living in a cardboard brooder box with a red lamp. Have chick starter and give them watermelon. Banana. Carrots as treats. My question is - at any point can we have them loose in the house (one bedroom). They will be inside for another 5 weeks or so and would love to get them use to being around is all so we can pet them and pick them up often.

Why are they inside, I start taking mine outside at about three weeks, they spend time in the sun and grass on warm days, you could let them loose in the house but they do poop everywhere, not sure why people keep them in the house.

The lady we bought them from told us they need to he under a heat lamp for 8 weeks in a broody box

I start out at 85 degrees the first week, lower it by 5 degrees a week until they are feathered, or brooder temperature is the same as outdoor temperature, so usually by three weeks I'm at 75 for brooder temperature, so I put them outside for a few hours, in a week you will probably just run a light at night. This is how I do it. Eight weeks is a long time to remain only in a brooder box. I make a small cover pen out of wire, give them food water and shade.

Here are mine from earlier this year, I think mine are around a week old when I started putting them out.

We had ours out in the big coop between 3 and 4 weeks. This was early April, 60s during the day, 30s at night with no problems. If they have feathers, they'll be fine.
