A friend gave us their Rooster yesterday because he crows and they live in town and their neighborhood didnt appreciate his LOUD wakeup crow! Well...he is HUGE. We've never had a 'meat' chicken, but he is 3times bigger than any of our 17 week RIRs. I just need affirmation that it is time for freezer camp. We have a mean Roo that will be going to camp too. What are your thoughts?

Butcher him now before he has a chance to keel over on his own. I butchered one that dressed out at 16 pounds. I roasted him like a turkey, dressing and all, and he was delicious. I suggest you do the same with this one. This is a case of sooner is better. At this weight and age, CornishX don't need an excuse to die.

X2 Now is the time to do it. He has not got much longer before it will be to late.

Butcher day today. Here's a pic before... handsome one he was.... dressed out weight 12.3 pounds! small turkey size. Guess he will be tomorrow's dinner

I knew the minute we picked him up he was ready to butcher long ago. but townfolks dont always know what to do with the chickens once they get them (because they were so cute and not much money) the rest of their flock were egg layers... really pretty mix. I'm hoping they want to rehome them as well, maybe before winter LOL a girl can hope!!!

That would be nice. Some pretty laying hens to add to the mix. Yup one can dream.
LOL my hubby is from the land of it lives til it dies and I am from the farm where Saturday was butcher day and Sunday was fried chicken.

That means I have some really really OLD laying hens laying about eating up the feed and not making eggs.

Oh he was good with the idea of chickens until I said it is time to rotate the flock. I explained what that meant and he bout cried thinking of his dear sweet little chickens ending up in the freezer.

OH NO! i grew up a 'townie' but my mom and dad were born and raised 'food growers'. mom would get a few crates of 'old hens' each fall and we would butcher and can the meat. it was pretty normal to me!

I do laugh a bit when I ask what he wants for dinner and he says fried chicken. I ask which one and we end up eating beef instead. Poor guy does not know how to react.

I did look at egg prices in the store yesterday. Bout fell over. The store brand is already at 4 dollars a dozen. So very glad I have hens running around the place.
