Hi - Cluck Rogers here.

I'm new to the chicken game so please excuse me if I'm asking some pretty basic questions.

I'm planning to buy 4 pullets for our new backyard coup (in planning phases). The idea was to let them free-range during the day, then secure them in the coup at night. My question is, once they start producing will they lay eggs inside the coup's boxes, or will they mix it up (some in the coup, some under shrubs around the yard)?

A followup question (if they will mix it up) is - any tips on getting them to lay in their boxes only? I don't want it to be Easter every day :)

They usually take to the nests pretty quickly, especially if you make them attractive. Fairly dark with comfy bedding about 12-18" above the floor is what I usually do. Make sure they're open and ready for use by point of lay. A fake egg or golf ball in the nests also gives them the hint.
Once you start getting eggs and they do lay in the bushes, keep them locked in the coop longer in the morning and they'll probably opt for the nests. The bulk of eggs come in the morning.
