Here is a picture showing how his leg looks.

I have no idea what is going on or how it happened. He will walk though prefers to lay around. I gave him oral antibiotics as it might be an infection. I pressed on it lightly and a little blood but no puss came out. I put topical antibiotics on the wound.

Poor thing!

That looks like either it got its leg stuck in a wire floor or it got some string wrapped around it. Put the leg in warm water and massage it to get the blood flowing back into the foot or it may die and fall off (I've seen it before). Keep putting antibiotics on it and keep the quail on a clean, easy to walk on surface. Offer vitamin rich food and make sure food and water are easy to reach.

I hope it gets better soon!

Oh string, that might be. Ill take a closer look at it today and do as you suggest regardless. Funny but he is not kept around anything that might have done this such as a wire cage but the rug pieces could have shed some long string that he might have picked up. It is very strange isnt it. He is able to use it normally without limping so it seems. If there is string around it I will try to remove it. He is so wiggly it is hard to get the leg still. I was lucky to get this picture!

OMG he had a piece of my hair wrapped around the indention point! Thank you so much for suggesting I look for something wrapped around the leg. That was it exactly. Poor guy I opened the wound by removing the hair, or as much as I could find and hopefully all of it, then applied more antibiotic ointment then gave some more oral antibiotic too. He has lots of vitamin enriched ground sunflower seed which they all love. Ill keep my eye on him.

Thank you again so very much.

Be careful removing tournaquets as it can cause severe damage to blood vessels and nerve endings. Someone who bought some eggs from me had a very similar problem except the bird did not survive long after the band aid was removed. This particular incident happened when she was trying to fix a chick with spraddle leg wit a band aid

Did you give yours oral antibiotics? So sorry your friend's girl didnt make it. Wow, the entire foot is swollen. This little one just had what looked like a couple of small rings around the leg but the foot always looked fine. I will check again today to see if the foot it now swollen, I hope not..

Yesterday afternoon I checked his leg. The indention between the rings had filled in and I have to say the wound looked a lot better. After removing the hair that was wrapped around his leg the wound bleed a little bit. I washed it and packed on the antibiotic ointment. He was walking just fine and actually always did even with the string. I never noticed any problems with his foot. I will keep an eye on the progress though.
