What is it like in a hatchery?

The first chicks I got were from a feed supply store, which they ordered from a hatchery. Since then I moved, and a nearby store does the same. That got me thinking, as I am considering to buy a couple chicks, What is it like in a hatchery? How are the parent birds treated? Is it like a puppy mill for birds? Please tell me! If that is what it is like, I don't want to buy chicks from them in the spring. Thank you!

What about the hatchery called "My Pet Chicken" ??? Are they any good?

Not all hatcheries are bad. Here at My Pet Chicken, we do not send chicks down chutes or handle them roughly. They are all hand sorted from their hatching trays into the breed trays. They are then hand picked for each order. I(The MPC Employee writing this) have actually had a chance to go to the farm and hatchery. It was far better than I could have expected. The breeding pens were clean, had room for the birds, and they were well cared for. The incubators were huge and very clean. All the employees were very careful with the chicks and I didn't see any signs of cruelty or rough handling.

My Pet Chicken does have a close working relationship with Meyer Hatchery. Please note, however, My Pet Chicken is not simply a middle-man; we have direct control over our breeding programs and are able to offer exclusive, brand new breeds and varieties. My Pet Chicken works closely with a breed specialist to help improve future generations and ensure our customers are receiving the best and healthiest stock possible.

My Pet Chicken has also partnered with two fantastic breeders who are providing good quality, fertile, exciting breeds for hatching eggs!
Additionally, our customer service department is staffed exclusively by chicken enthusiasts who have their own flocks. Rest assured, they'll be uniquely qualified to understand your concerns and properly advise you, no matter the question.
