Hi. We are new to raising backyard chickens. We have always sprayed our yard for Mosquitos in the past, but now of course are dealing with them in full force since we added chickens to our family. A friend uses this product and it has been very effective for them. I contacted the company and they said it is safe to use around farm animals, including chickens. I was wondering your thoughts on the ingredient list since so many people here have so much experience. Thank you!

Looks pretty benign to me......
.....odd that the 77% of the volume, all inactives, are not broken down into individual amounts.

Anything that kills skeeters will also decimate the free free-range critters that free range chickens love so well.

Mosquitoes spread fowl pox so it is helpful to control the little hummers.

Permethrum is a good insecticide and it is safe except for insects like mosquitoes and aquatic life.

Quick search:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Permethrin

Permethrin is a common synthetic chemical, widely used as an insecticide, acaricide, and insect repellent. It belongs to the family of synthetic chemicals called pyrethroids and functions as a neurotoxin, affecting neuron membranes by prolonging sodium channel activation. It is not known to rapidly harm most mammals or birds, but is dangerously toxic to fish and to cats: in cats it may induce hyperexcitability, tremors, seizures, and even death.[1] In general, it has a low mammalian toxicity and is poorly absorbed by skin.

In agriculture, permethrin is mainly used on cotton, wheat, maize, and alfalfa crops. Its use is controversial because, as a broad-spectrum chemical, it kills indiscriminately; as well as the intended pests, it can harm beneficial insects including honey bees, and aquatic life.

Personally, I use Octenol as an attractant for the mosquitoes, and a highly modified bug zapper in the pen, to attract everything else.

As they do not freerange, I supplement my run with insects for the birds to enjoy.
