Hey ya'll,

We have this chicken coop http://www.truevalue.com/product/Chicken-Coop-28-x-52-75-x-39-25-In-/64221.uts?keyword=coop and it's very functional but the quality is very poor. We are down to 5 chickens, they are still young, not laying yet so the size is fine for now. Originally, I was going to order another one of these when they got bigger and put 3 in each coop but I'm looking for something a little bit better in quality. My husband is NOT handy, he can put things together with my help but can not build anything from scratch. I have been asking him to reinforce this one but he has no desire to help with that, lol. The chickens are out most of the day in the yard, we have a 6 ft fence all around but I'd like something with a run so when I don't want to let them out all day they can still have space. Any suggestions? I don't have a huge budget either so I know that's going to limit my options. Thank you!

I have, but I live in Jacksonville and they just legalized backyard chicken keeping so every Tom, Dick, and Harry is trying to capitalize on that! $800 - 3000 chicken coops!

I could buy exactly the same one because the design is great but the quality stinks! I was hoping for something with a run so I could connect the two. I've seen a few but I'm still trying to comparison shop.

My friend's husband is handy, he said he'd be willing to come over next week and see what he can do :)

The easiest way to get a coop going is the "pre cut, put together sheds, these can be found at Home Depot or Lowe's. They are fairly inexpensive and you can use 5 gal buckets on their sides for nest boxes and just screw in some 2 x 4 roost bars. Cut some "windows" and install 1/2" or 1/4" hardware cloth (mesh) for predator protection and bingo, nice and new coop.

The only real draw back is roofing is not included but if you can roll paint you can weather proof the roof with roll on rubber roofing sealant.

Don't use a Metal storage building, they are way to hot in the summertime to be of use as a coop.
