Hello! We are relatively new to raising chickens (have a flock of 20 + Roo, of varying breeds) as of January 2015. We essentially inherited the handfed, pastured flock when we moved here. We are enjoying them, and have minimal issues with Roo (at this point anyways...)
We had 5 chicks hatch the end of July, and beginning of August. The little ones go out periodically in the barn, and Roo seems to have no issues with them whatsoever, and seems to actually protect them from the other adult hens that aren't very welcoming, is that normal? Should we be concerned he may become aggressive towards them at some point? Or is it ok now that he's (seemingly) accepted them? One Mother hen has integrated back to the flock already, and only comes around the little ones when we let them out into the barn. They are still separate most the time.
Thank you!

If the roo is already protecting them against overly aggressive hens then he has accepted them... this actually happens more often than a lot of people think... most issues with chicks happen between them and the other hens, not the roo...
I even had a bantam roo adopt several chicks and raised them himself... you have a great roo, let him do his job in showing the other girls that the chicks are part of their flock and I wouldn't worry about him 'turning on them'...

My roos have always been the most welcoming to young, new flock members. It is the top hens that peck ther little heads and chasd them out.

Exactly... in fact today my Lav Ameraucana roo was playing with our youngsters... they got excited and ran flapping across the yard and he joined in! Was too cute to see...
