Welcome to BYC!!! :)

None of my hens are house chickens but I've looked a lot into it. If your raising your hens to live indoors make sure they still have a laying box and a roosting/sleeping area.

Be careful about leaving out things that could harm your indoor chickens such as staples, broken glass, pets such as dogs or cats.

If you would like to train your chicken to be a good indoor hen you'll have to teach her to be potty trained like a dog or cat. Like a cat, you can leave a litter box out for her to poo in and teach her that. If she isn't listening at the time you can get her a diaper made for chickens that live indoors. :)

Welcome to BYC. Glad you decided to join our flock. I've never had a house chicken, nor do I know anyone personally who has. However drumstick diva will probably be along in a little bit to greet you and she knows more about house chickens than I do. She can probably give you some good advice in that area. If you haven't done so already, definitely check out our Learning Center at https://www.backyardchickens.com/atype/1/Learning_Center. There is loads of useful information there. Please feel free to ask any other questions you may have. We are here to help in any way we can. Cheers.

Thank for the PR Michael.

Yes, my friend has had house chickens (various breeds) over the past 25 years. She also had a silkie that loved hanging out the car window like a dog. People could not believe it wasn't a little "foo foo" dog. Based on my friends experiences, I've only known her for 8 years, seramas and silkies seem to do the best in the house. She doesn't diaper them ( it would be a real pain putting on, taking off many times a day). She just cleans up as soon as she sees a mess. Her house does NOT smell. She currently has 2 seramas and 2 silkies.

When she leaves the house, the chickens lay by the door with the dog. When she comes home they mob her. In the evening they crowd onto the chair to watch tv with her.

I do recommend the "people with house chickens thread." - there is no "right" way to manage house chickens. You do what works in your situation. It is good if they get some outdoor time with supervision- like when she does yard work but they are perfectly happy in the house.

glad you have joined us.

I have no experience with a house chicken, but think it would be and Eggciting adventure. Good luck with your plans.
