Help me pick the best Blue Copper Marans Rooster!

Hi all,

We have 4 blue copper marans cockerels and can only keep one. We have two with feathered legs, two without. Two have copper on their chests as well as necks. We will be breeding them and want to keep the best looking guy, but want to make sure we aren't overlooking anything. These guys were hatched end of april this year.

Rooster 1 - he's our favorite, but doesn't have much feathering on his legs. We like his darker back though




Rooster 2 - he's our second favorite



Rooster 3 - He's not very nice, he's small, and he has a very copper chest.



Rooster 4 - He's big and pretty but has a lot of copper on the chest

The 4th pic down, the one on the left. He is much darker, and his colors is closer to the same. You want the copper to match at the saddle, hackle and wing/shoulder feathers, as much as possible. You want to stay away from the gold color, and more copper. Also pay attention to the eye color. The yellow/ orange colored eye. The left one in pick #4 stands out from the rest. I been raising marans since 2007. They are by far, my favorite breed.

None of them are really good quality, and worth keeping if you are really serious about breeding. Where the parents hatchery stock? If you are serious about breeding to standard, the pairing that threw the cockerels with red chests should not be repeated. Investing in some good, show quality stock might be a good idea if this is the kind of birds that are consistently being produced by your flock.
 
Good he's our favorite too. We'll keep the dark one. We aren't seriously breeding them, just want to breed them for our own use because they're a good dual purpose bird; we like the dark eggs and the roos are big enough to make meat birds. I just don't want to be breeding bad ones, even if they just stay on our property.

We got them from a farm in Colorado as straight run chicks. I would like to add some better quality birds at some point, but they seem to be harder to come by.

Hatching eggs and chicks from quality lines aren't that hard to come by. Most breeders will ship hatching eggs or day old chicks, but you do have to be willing to pay a bit more for quality.
 
If you just want to breed for yourself, you have what you need with that roo. He's not show quality but that don't mean he's not going to throw something better in the next generation. I would recommend looking for another roo down the road that's not related to your hens.
 
Does the blue copper maran roosters mature late. I was told the one I just bought was 8 months. He shows no signs of being into the ladies. Or does it even happen thta they never become manly
