Red Sex Link?

Got my 7 almost 2 year old Red Sex-Links yesterday. Today they gave us 6 eggs not bad but who's the slacker?
As a follow up I added supplemental lighting I have it turning on at 4:30am and off at 7:30 am. They went through an adjustment time where I got no eggs for almost a week and now it is 2 or 3 a day normally. I put 2" dowels inside the coop and they love roosting on those. Using 16% layer pellets w/ about 4% calcium, also using my garden cover crop of crimson clover and annual rye, plus bought some scratch but I don't give them much scratch. Coop is 4'x8' x4' high with 4 nesting boxes and a 8'x12' run that goes under the coop. Using the deep litter method with wood chips in coop & run. The farmer I got them from said they will lay eggs where ever they feel like it said he had to look all over for them. So far in 1 1/2 months only got 2 outside of nesting boxes so that's good.

P.S. I understand what someone said about scratch being like crack. If I go in my garage before I go to the run they all rush to the door calling and waiting for me there.

I want to thank everyone for the great information I got most of my ideas here and so far it's successful in my pea brain anyway

So glad your flock is meeting your expectations and that you are enjoying them.

You might consider getting 18 to 20℅ protein layer feed in winter. My RSL seem to do better with more protein during the cold months as there are fewer bugs out. That can help boost production as well as your lighting. Remember you need 16 hours for the most productive lay.

I agree BYC is a great place for encouragement and information.

Keep us posted on your developments.

production of eggs for the last 2 months has now been a 4 a day average for 7 hens all over 2 years old.
Very happy with it Think my dog is too he gets some of the eggs that are cracked on his food. I saw him
the other day laying down by the coop watching the chickens. He's the guardian of our property and I guess
he's adopted the chickens now as property
