My duckes were hatched about May 1st and i do beleice I have started to get some eggs. Iam i right that the shells of a duck egg is thicker than a chicken egg? I also thought a duck is was a little larger than a chicken egg. I was advised that my chicken eggs might be a little small in the beginning when they start laying for the 1st time. Is this tjis same with ducks? Will their eggs be a little smaller at first? Like my name I am a 1st timer raising them but some 20 years ago my mother in law raised them but she has passed.

Yes, duck egg shells are much harder than chicken egg shells, at least in my experience they are. We've had a couple we had to pound on a rock a few times to get them to break. They can be smaller in the beginning, and they're also sometimes malformed. If he malformed ones continue long, it usually means the duck has a nutritional issue.

I have a Khaki Campbell and she is a very good layer. She has laid every single day since she began. Have not had one misshapen or shell-less egg from her. Only a double yoker (I think). As far as the hardness of the shell, yes. When I was collecting my eggs one morning, I accidentally dropped hers about a foot off the ground and all the egg did was crack. It didn't actually break and I'm confident enough to say if a chicken egg fell from that distance, it would break. My Khaki lays about a 2.2oz egg which is considered a "Large" egg everyday. She has laid a 2.56oz egg which is considered "Jumbo", but I believe it was the double yoker. (Cannot confirm or deny completely because I give my eggs away to family/friends.) When she first started laying, her eggs were definitely smaller than they are now but she has leveled out as of right now. They may or may not get any bigger but they are very yummy and wonderful for cupcakes!

So true @JadeComputerGal ! I was baking cookies for a client, and when baking for others I used pasteurized chicken eggs from the store. I save the good stuff for my family :) As I was baking, I went to break the chicken eggs open to add them to the dough. I hadn't used a store bought egg in months, so when I went to crack it open, I smashed it like a pancake on the counter. My kids thought it was the funniest thing they had ever seen. It was like smacking a bug - whack! I guess I had gotten used to cracking open my nice thick duck eggs :)

It's really nuts if you're used to cracking chicken eggs. We don't usually crack our eggs on rocks, btw. The reason we did it with those two is that they were in a KC nest, and we could tell they had gone bad. We didn't want to open them to see what might have gone wrong anywhere near the house, so we took them to the edge of the property. We banged the first one on a rock several times, and the hubby was ready to go get a hammer just as I banged it for the 5th or 6th time and it got a small crack.

So do you cook/bake for a living? That sounds like one of the best things ever.

I used to full time. Right now, you have to really beg to get me to bake for you :). It was really fun, but it was exhausting. Maybe again some day. Here was my website - www.AllThingsExquisite.com

I baked between 20-50 dozen of these babies a week, so maybe you can see why I got burned out :)

That is absolutely amazing, but I guess you can get burned out on anything if you do it enough. Absolutely amazing. I wish I could do something creative like that. I'd actually be happy to order some if you were still doing it.

Ok, if it were duck related, I might relent. :) And thanks!
