This is my first time raising chickens and have noticed one of my chickens has a strange development on her head. The blackish wart like bumps are concerning to me. Is it something I should be worried about?
I saw something called fowl pox but that looks different from what my chicken has.

It's not cold where I live tho! It's 100 right now! Anything else it could be?

What climate are you in? While frostbite can certainly cause that sort of damage, it would require you to be in an area whet that is currently an issue. Pox would be more likely

Central California. We have been having 100 degree weather for a few days now.

Well like you said it might be pox. I just did more research and I think it might be fowl pox or avian pox. Apparently there is no treatment but she should recover right?

Hi from So Cal

I'm posting to follow. I have a couple hens that I'm monitoring. I hope it's pecking, we'll see. Your pic doesn't look like pecking to me either. Sorry for asking questions rather than answering yours! Are you in Central Valley SJV with mosquitoes? Can I ask where your birds came from, how long have you had them, how old are they? I'm asking to try to get to the source. We have no mosquitoes here. I might see 3 per year. Wondering if the babies I purchased had the virus?
When I found a few black spots, I hunted around a bit, found a good article from UC Davis. Here's the link if you haven't seen it.

thanks for posting!

No worries but yes I am in the sjv. I haven't seen many mosquitoes this year maybe it's way too dry right now. Not sure where they originally came from but got them locally this spring so they are about 7 months old now.
Thank you for the site I'll take a look at it!
