We have free range chicken and ducks. They have a chicken cube that we lock during the night for their protection and we open during the day and let them wonder around the property. They are 8 months old. We never had any problems before. Last night in the head count we were missing one chicken that later we found with no head (on the pictures above) and today we found another one attacked in the same way but thus one wasn't dead. She's missing half of the back of her neck. We had to stich her us and we still don't know of she's going to make it. What animal can cause this type of damage? We have 22 acres in the city surrounded by neighborhood. And there are no coyotes or any other type of large predators we know of. Both attacks happened during the day.

I had a Dominique that was killed similarly. I suspected owls as there was a fence post a few feet away from the dead body. Mine was also done around 5-6pm. Body left with no head and no other birds disturbed.

The birds we lost in this manner were killed by a raccoon, so that may be a possibility. I wonder if mink and weasels attack in a similar manner as well.

Whatever it was, it is sure to be back now that it knows where it can get a free and easy meal. So, be sure to take precautions now so you do not lose anymore. You may also want to set up a trail cam so you know exactly what you are dealing with and also set some traps to try and catch it.

Fishers also eat the heads first. If the attack was during the day it wasn't one of those though.

Definitely a Great Horned Owl. Lost a young Australorp last night (head completely gone) and "luckily" caught the vicious raptor back for round 2 tonight, just before dusk.

We lost a chicken today. We couldn't find the body, all we found was this bunch of feathers. Any ideas what could've killed it?
