Little Banty stepped on by a cow = Leg broken & floppy - Trimming leg feathers??

She looks sweet in her sling. What brand of electrolytes do you have? Some of them call for making a solution, and then taking a certain amount out to add to a gallon of water. Most feed stores carry ones where you add small amount to a gallon of water. Rooster Booster makes Vitamins With Lactobacillus, that is vits, electrlolytes, and a probiotic. Durvet makes one in a small bottle, plus packets for the big 50 gallon tanks. Some grapes are good. Adding water to her feed to make it soupy might get her to drink and eat better.
I have the durvet high performance poultry pack. They had the small packets but they were more money for less so i got the durvet instead, which I probably shouldnt have. It is a 4 oz package. Pretty sure its way too strong, I have been watering it down but maybe not enough. I tried watering down her feed too but she was not in the least bit interested in it and didn't really touch it. I boiled some more eggs tonight so I will see if she will eat any of that in the morning with her grapes. How often should I be expecting her to poop to know she is eating properly? She worked her way out of the sling earlier and i put her on a towel while i made some adjustments and she pooped, i put her back in and she passed clean out. She had been acting like she wanted to get out for a while, maybe I'm reading too much into it but she acted like she didnt want to poop in her "nest" lol.

Hey Eggcessive,

I had a question for you.... or anyone else who has knowledge of broken legs.... when I made the sling for PJ's i took the splint off of her leg, but I wrapped it up really good in some of that vet wrap, just so it wasnt so dangly. After being in the sling all day for about 4 or 5 days, she started getting a little antsy, so I have been letting her be out in my back yard with another chicken that has a hurt leg during the day, and she spends her nights in the sling. She has been getting around amazingly well with her one good leg, and she is now starting to put a little weight on her hurt leg, and is even moving it a little. How long do you think I should wait before taking off her vetwrap "cast"? I do not want to take it off too early and risk re-injury. Thanks in advance!

Two weeks is about average for a broken bone to develop a callus in a chicken's bone, so I would probably remove after that. It's good to take it off periodically to check circulation or for any irritation to the skin. It's great that she has a friend o be with while she recovers. You could also give her a little calcium in her water daily. Here is a good link to read about broken bones in birds, especially the first part of the book and the parts about broken legs: https://theiwrc.org/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/Duerr_Splinting_Manual_2010.pdf

Ok thank you!!! I had read 2 weeks, but then I read 6 weeks, so much conflicting information, that i figured I'd just ask :) She is so feathery that it really is hard to get a good look at anything, but I think tonight I will unwrap it and check to make sure everything is still okay. I'm scared to leave it off just yet, she still seems to have no movement or sensation in her foot. I have been offering her oyster shells and she has been eating egg ration and her appetite has really improved.

She is such a sweetie, every night when I got out into the back yard to collect her i squat down and hold out my arms and she hops right into my hands, ready to go into her sling for the night. She used to be a very flighty girl, but she is super friendly now! Thanks for all your help!!
