So, I am interested in adding a couple of Black Jersey Giants to my flock in the spring. The flock I have now came from Cackle Hatchery and I am beyond pleased with them. What I am wondering is, I like the fact that the Jersey Giants get giant, but have read that hatchery stock usually won't be as big. So far my mixed flock from Cackle is living up to the breed standards. I'm not interested in showing the birds, but do enjoy nice birds to look at. The description online says that they are raising a non exhibition line. Has anyone ordered this breed from Cackle, and if so, would you be willing to share your experience? Thanks so much!

I had 2 blacks that came via another person from Cackle.
I also had whites and blues from Sandhill Preservation.
I liked them all. I call them gentle giants.
If I had more space, I'd breed all 3 varieties.

I like the fact that they are gentle and the fact that they are so large. I had heard that the hatchery strains usually don't get as big, though. Did you notice a difference in size between the breeder and hatchery stock? I really want one of those 13 lb roos, lol.

Are you in the Midwest?
The Missouri Poultry Yearbook has a few breeders. There's a breeder of whites in Elsberry. Cackle has black and white.
Several other black breeders.
I wouldn't call Sandhill a breeder. More of a preservationist of rare genetics.
His birds were a good size but you'll clearly get much bigger birds from a breeder.

I have Jersey Giants from McMurray and Townline. All have lived up to the size. My rooster from McMurray is about 12 or 13 lbs now. Even my geese don't mess with him. I don't show so I have no problems with Hatchery stock. Many hatcheries now contract out to smaller breeders for their birds. Either they are direct shipped from the breeder or eggs are sent to the hatchery from the breeder.

Yes, I'm in central Missouri, about 30 minutes from Cackle Hatchery. From what you have both said, and the fact that I am happy with my current purchases, I think I will continue with their stock, unless I hear a horror story. Thanks for the input!!!
