we put a dozen eggs from a lady an hour away under our broody hen. 9 of the 12 hatched. They all look great, except one looks a like a runt and little weak maybe. But its eating and drinking. so I think it should be fine. We did the feather check and it looks like all 9 are hens. we were hoping for one roo. I hope you have as good of luck.

I should try feather sexing these. Mind you I've heard it's not reliable for some breeds and australorps are among them but will be fun to see if it's right :)

This whole adventure hatching started two years ago trying to get a blue, black and splash australorp.
I've got the splash, if one of these is a girl I've got the black and if the other is a boy I can breed to the splash to get my blue. I think I'd rather they were both girls though as I'm kinda attached to them already and keeping a rooster will only be short term till someone complains as we aren't zoned for them.

Getting a bit to bouncy for the fish tank so they have graduated to our old bird cage. Just need to check it will hold the temp under the heat lamp tonight, otherwise they will have to go back to the tank at bedtime.

1000

Supposed to hit 33c here today so they might even get a little bit of time outside.

They're so cute!! :D Are they black or blue?

I'm struggling to tell if my little solo Australorp chick is black or a dark blue colour.... and I've got a gut feeling that mine is a rooster, haha :p

I'm the same. First off I thought they were black but then they aren't solid black, their wings are more like a dark grey.

If there is a rooster I hope they are black because then I can hang on to it hopefully long enough to get some fertile eggs with my splash and that then gets me blue eggs. If the other was a girl that would then give me all three colours. If they are blue I can't breed a black though.

They say you can't feather sex australorps but if it was accurate mine will be both girls. First time I've ever not minded a roo so that would be just my luck lol
