Brand new to BYC and New to Chicken Raising Also!

Hello everyone,

I have been thinking about getting some chickens for a few years now and as soon as the coop is finished, the 12 pullets I found through a local source will be moving in! Yay, can't wait. Hubby is almost finished building the coop. I am a total newby to chickens so please excuse my ignorance in advance.

I live in Eastern Wasshington on about an acre with my husband. We retired in 2010 after running a construction company for 25 years. I also worked as computer applications manager for a large health care provider. We have six kids, now all in their 30's and five grandchildren. Two of the grandchildren stay with us before and after school and we're all very excited about the new chicken adventure.

I have gotten so much information from this site (before joining) through googling my chicken questions that I thought this would be a great place to get started. I am looking forward to a getting acquainted.

Hi Kathie. I'm new here too. I'm a teacher we hatch our in school n this year I couldn't resist keeping six. I love them. Find them peaceful and can't wait for my eggs. I named them all. 5 hens 1 rooster which I love hearing him crow. My 5 yr old grandson learns so much n loves them.

Thanks to everyone who replied to my introductory post. (I am not very experienced with blogging, so please bear with me while I learn.)

I wanted to get pullets for my first time with chickens because I thought they would have a better chance of surviving my 'chicken learning curve'. (lol) I found a woman nearby who was selling pullets in the breeds I wanted and figured that would be a good way to start. I am mainly interested in egg production (right now) so I got leghorns, buff orpingtons and white rocks. I am not getting a rooster at this point, but because the pullets I'm getting have been raised together, I am hoping that they will be used to one another and will make the transition smoothly.

Right now, my husband and I are building the coop and run and I am reading up on chickens. The grandkids are really excited and I think this is going to be fun for all of us. I have a lot more experience in gardening than chicken keeping, but will learn as we go!
