The black Australorp chicks we have are getting big at just a little over 4 weeks old. How old would they need to be put out in the chicken pen would you say? Have them in a smaller area now to keep them warm at night but they are about to out grow it. Live near the northern Kentucky border

Any advice on how old chicks should be before turned loose to roam in the chicken pen ? Going to get rid of the older ones first .

I always put them out at 5 or more weeks, but I would recommend housing your newest chicks in a large metal dog cage in the coop. This provides them with a place of refuge in case the older birds are picking excessively. I'm pretty sure the logic behind this method is so that the elders can get used to seeing the new additions without being able to get to them. Another thing that I did was to prop the door open a crack just large enough that they can slip in and out (this allows them to get used to their surroundings).

Thank you again Alex.
We are going to cull out all the old birds, they have stopped laying almost completely for quite awhile and they are all healthy
