Chickens In Ya Window

Are you getting a break from the rain today? 5 inches OF RAIN is crazy. 17 is a complete disaster. I heard a report of one town or city that received 25 inches of rain in 24 hours. Devastating. How is your little farm holding up? Are you on high ground?

Remember that broody I had? At first external pip and cheeping she was cured of motherhood! Acted like she was hatching out alligators. I had to put the eggs in the bator and as of this morning I had 2 out of the shell and three pipped.

As for the BCM I'm not sure, but I think I ended up with 2 pullets out of 10 chicks. Looking on the bright side, I will have a good group of cockerels to pick from and could have a kick *** breeding trio by the time I'm done. That would be worth the money.

Georgetown, a little north of Charleston, got 24 inches. We're right at $100K damage with 5 inches. 17 is unimaginable.
2/10? That's worse than my average. You should be able to pick out a pretty darn good roo, though.
I have a cuckoo Marans that flees the nest as soon as they pip, but with my blu... Hands off approach I didn't find them until it was too late

Thank you everyone for the support and comments about the hatch! It was wonderful!!

I am at that really difficult point each year where I have to determine which birds will remain as next year's breeders, and which will finish development as meat birds.  I take the keepers off of the grower diet once they have grown to full height, and put them on a flock raiser diet so they develop more slowly and with stronger structures.

I have someone who wants to buy out all my Narragansett hens.  While this isn't really a problem (it's a great mama hen and two of her daughters), it puts me into an awkward position for spring as I will potentially have many turkey colors instead of just Narr/Golden Narr.

I need to select from the other young hens in my pen for next year's breeders, and fortunately the choices work in my favor.  For the ship-a-thon, I may be offering a little later depending on when the young girls start to lay, but all the eggs will be wildcard thanks to turkey color genetics.

I am keeping my Golden Narragansett tom, and son-of-tom who will be his successor in a couple of years.  The hens will be Bronze-Red and Bourbon Red, selected for size and conformation.  The cool thing is that the babies will come in many colors:
  • Golden Narragansett
  • Narragansett
  • Bronze-Red
  • Buff
  • Bourbon Red
  • Bronze

Is there anyone in the ship-a-thon interested in my turkey eggs who would object to not being certain what color they would hatch out?  I can vent-stain the Bourbon Red hens reducing the possibilities to four colors (Golden Narragansett, Bronze-Red, Buff, Bourbon Red).  All six colors would come from the Bronze-Red hens.

I have to ask you to please give me the details on this vent-staining you mentioned. I'm thinking one thing but not sure. Sounds like it might be useful for me in spring, sinceI'll have a few colors till I sell some off.

YAY!  Sold six stewing hens and four young roosters!  That leaves only the bantams in the brooder pen, and Baby finally graduated to the brooder pen.  No more house turkey!

Awesome. Love Baby!

5 is a Korean 17, right?

I may have missed it on this thread during the storm, but I read somewhere else that you hatched 8 for 9? Shipped, too? Do we get to have our first In Ya Window parade?

Yes!! I locked down 9 eggs (all that developed locked down) and on the night of day 19, I had 3 pips. Woke up to those same 3 pips and my heart sank. I thought "here we ago again, the rest are going to die in lockdown" and then through the day, and the next day and the next day, I kept getting more pips! 2 wrong enders, 1 hatched perfectly fine by itself but the other had totally smooshed it's head into the poop in the pointy end and was stuck, so he needed help. But all 8 are healthy, eating, drinking, no leg or feet issues. I would have been happy with 5! Lol!
