Well, I gave the last oral dosage of a 5-day treatment (twice a day) of the Tylan 50 to my hen this morning, along with the Terramycin ointment in her eyes. She's been acting good, but her eyes are still puffy (swollen) and continue to have that sleepy look to them. They don't look as crusty anymore -- just swollen. Maybe it will take more time of the ointment???
Here's my next question. About 6 weeks ago, I had changed out all of the sand mixture in their run area with clean, fresh stuff (a mixture with 1/2 sand and 1/2 decomposed granite) from our local rock yard. I'm starting to wonder if this sand mixture is what has caused the eye infections. As they dust bathe, they kick it all over the place and it's pretty dusty. But to be honest, I can't see it to be much dustier than the old sand that I removed. Anyway, I thought maybe some got into her eyes and created an infection. I'm not sure if I've done the right thing, but I ended up spraying down the sand yesterday with water to help cut down the dustiness. I hate doing this in their run area, as I'm always afraid of the bacteria from their poos going crazy in the wet environment. But if it's the culprit as to why this hen and a few others are getting eye infections, I feel I didn't have much of a choice. What's your thoughts on this???
