Step-child Barred Rock Hen - HELP!

Thread Starter

One of my barred rock hens is being pecked in a cannabilistic way.  I thought it was three young roosters, but even now that they're gone, she was hurt again when we pulled her from isolation and let her free range again.  I found her hiding out in one of the coops.  Poor baby.  She was bleeding again.  So, now she's back in isolation being treated with Neosporin and love until we figure this out.

Our chickens free range all day and are locked away into two coops at nightime.  We have one Rhode Island Red rooster, two hens, three Barred Rock hens, one Wyandotte hen, and two Bantums (one rooster and the other unknown).

What can I do?

I think it might help to try and identify the culprit. If you manage to do this, then isolate it for a few weeks and see how your victim chicken gets along. In theory (although not always) the culprit, once returned to the flock should be less dominant and hopefully less likely to be a bully. If not, then you may well have to chose whether to either keep the culprit or the victim chicken.

Good luck

Watch the Barred Rocks. I have a feeling it's one of them; my BRs are the top hens and they don't care who you are, if you stick your head in the wrong place you WILL get pecked by Floppy; she's the meanest one.

Find the bully and give her a time out. I like to put them where they can see everybody else frolicking and having a good ol time GETTING ALONG, while she sits in jail for a day or two and pouts.

Like being incarcerated. Works wonders big_smile.png

The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. He makes me lie down in green pastures. He leads me beside still waters. He restores my soul. He leads me in paths of righteousness for his name's sake. Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me. You prepare a table before me in the presence of my...
