So my poultry nipples got here today and I have some questions. Also I got them from two sellers on Amazon because I wanted to see the difference between both kinds/wanted extra even though I knew they're the same kind and I just checked the packages and they're actually from the same exact address too, just a different company name and one bag is beat up. But that's not the question.

Anyway, I got a 10 pack and a 25 pack. I know 35 is way too many especially for only 9 chickens but I figure it's good to have extras in case they break or anything. Plus eventually I'll have more chickens. I think I'll start the chicks on them and then have a few buckets as adults. Probably won't keep the water inside the coop as I've learned from here it makes inside more humid and/or they can spill the water and make a mess. So probably one or two inside the run and then maybe a couple scattered around the yard too. Same for feeders. Except the feeder I'll probably keep inside the run. I'll pick up some buckets eventually but probably not until they actually get here.

So my first question is what can I put the nipples in for the chicks? Seems like a bucket would be too big?

I'm gonna make feeders too. I think the street elbow bucket type kind. About that, how does it stay in? And how many buckets do you think?

Next question is how many water nipples can you put on a bucket? 3? 4? I think they're the vertical kind but you could probably put them in any way. I'm doing vertical though.

Also they're the threaded/screw on kind but I didn't really understand exactly WHAT you're screwing them into?

And same question as for the feeders, how many buckets and how big?

Thanks in advance.

Here you can see the nipples. I can get a close up if needed. They do have the plastic washer too

If you drill a 11/32 hole in the bottom of a 5 gallon bucket the nipples will screw into the bottom of the bucket kind of cutting threads as it goes in. Just make sure you don't over tighten and strip out the hole. 3 or 4 nipples per bucket seems to work fine. They will also screw into the cap of a pop bottle or the bottom if you can find one with a big enough flat spot. Just remember you need a vent hole on the top of whatever container you use, it doesn't need to be big but is needed for the water to flow from the nipple.

Thanks for your help :) I'm not sure what size bits we have but I think we have a ton of different sizes and if we don't have that one I'm sure we could probably buy one. thanks again. although another quick question, how many buckets do you think I'd need?

I'm using one for 12 chickens right now and it's working fine. They have been going thru about 1-1 1/2 gallons of water a day in the heat this summer. I try to keep it in the shade for sumer and sun for winter.

Wow just one it's working that's great. :) and I never even thought about the sun and shade thing, that's a great idea!
