I'm a very new chicken owner... 4 weeks in. :) I had chickens as a child but was never responsible for the care of them. My now 21 yr old son, while away at school, had 3 chickens from babies to 9 months old. His roommates weren't loving the idea so now I'm the proud owner of these 3 beautiful hens. He told me they were Red and Black Star hens but I'm not sure if he's even sure.

I live in Huntington Beach, CA in a typical residential neighborhood. I've built a small coop (from a kit) and they free range in my enclosed back yard all day and stroll into the coop at sunset. I'm learning as I go and have already read and learned a lot from BackYard Chickens.

They are laying beautifully... I get an egg from each, every day.

There's a pic of me and my 3 lovely ladies - Beatrice, Bertha and Esther (all named from my grandmothers who are no longer here) and their coop!

Welcome to BYC. Glad you decided to join our flock. The hen in the front is definitely a Black Star which is one of several labels under which some hatcheries market their Black Sex Links. However the other two appear to be lacking the white underfluff and white tail feathers which are typical of Red Stars (Red Sex Links). They appear to be Production Reds instead. Black Stars are very friendly and hardy, laying machines. You should get loads for large brown eggs from that girl. Production Reds are excellent layers as well. If you haven't done so already, definitely check out our Learning Center at https://www.backyardchickens.com/atype/1/Learning_Center. There is loads of useful information there. Please feel free to ask any questions you may have. We are here to help in any way we can. Cheers.

Thanks Michael for all that information! My Black Star "Esther" is very friendly! She wants to be near me and has begun jumping on my lap (not sure if it's ok to let her do that). My two red hens, which you have identified as Productions Reds, are also quite sociable and don't mind me petting them. All three are great layers!! Yippee! Thanks for that link for the Learning Center ... I've already begun scrolling through it.

Everyone here is SO nice! Thanks to everyone!

Hi Liz,

I'm glad to hear you're enjoying your flock. Those fresh laid eggs are good, aren't they? Some chickens are very sociable so if it's ok with you if the one sits on your lap, that's great!

If you have any questions, feel free to ask. There is a lot of information here and a lot of friendly, helpful members so make yourself at home!
