Hello from Maine :)

Hi everyone!
My boyfriend and I purchased our first home in October of 2013 and have been patiently waiting for the right time to build our coop and start our own flock of chickens! The time is now, and we couldn't be mor excited to start this adventure!
Currently, he and a friend of ours is building a cozy little coop for a small flock. I really want a rooster, which he isn't sold on (but I usuall get my way, haha). I can't wait to post pictures of the completed coop and our girls (and boy) when we get them!
I am excited to be a part of this community and look forward to getting to know you all!

Hi Kayla, welcome to BYC!

That's great that you're almost ready for your first flock :) Just a word of caution about roosters, in order to prevent over-breeding, he'll need about 8-10 hens to "share the love". If you were thinking of a smaller flock than that, you probably ought to re-think having a roo. You'll get plenty of eggs from the girls without him (maybe even more since they won't be stressed).

Take a look at the great articles in the Learning Center, lots of reading material on all things chicken. And if you have questions, always feel free to ask.

Good luck to you!

Thank you for the welcome! We will have 8 chickens! We are thinking about Buff Orpingtons. Our neighbor has a buff Orpington rooster who is a frequent visitor in our yard, so maybe I won't need a rooster after all, haha. He is currently chilling in my yard next to me as I write..

We are super excited about starting our flock and appreciate tips and tricks always smile.png

Welcome to BYC, Kayla. Glad you decided to join our flock. X2 on NorthFlChick; if you decide to get a rooster you will need enough hens to go with him that your hens are not over-bred, battered, and even potentially, seriously injured. The only reason you really need a rooster is to fertilize eggs for hatching and 1 rooster can easily handle 10-15 hens in that regard. Also, your hens will likely lay better if they are not stressed by having a rooster around. If you haven't done so already, definitely check out our Learning Center at http://www.backyardchickens.com/atype/1/Learning_Center. There is loads of useful information there. Please feel free to ask any questions you may have. We are here to help in any way we can. Cheers.

I agree with Michael, he gave you the rooster truth.
