Hello

My pullet's comb turned dark purple/balck about 2 weeks ago, but in the last few days has started reverting back to red. During this period she was eating and acting normally, but not laying. She has now started laying again. During this time, I think her poop had also been a bit runny.

So I'm pleased that she seems fine, but I'm curious to know what might have caused it. Can anyone help?

thanks
Paul

For some background:
I live in Dubai, UAE and whilst it has been a hot summer, the change in comb colour didn't correspond with any change in temperature.
The chicken is some sort of cross breed and hardy in this climate - bought from a local poultry market, but I don't know any more than that (specific age for example) as no one spoke English and I don't speak Arabic.
The pullet started laying about 6 weeks ago.

From what i have observed, combs can change colour even on an hourly basis so i would not worry about it too much. As she stopped laying it may be just her body is lacking in key nutrients so she took a break. If you give layers food and provide additional (optional) oyster shell, then i would not worry too much. In such cases, as long as you are feeding as suggested, you may consider adding vitamin supplements / electrolytes to her water also.

Thanks CT
There was a change in diet around the same time so it may have played a part. I will try and get some oyster shell as well.

Best wishes

Your'e welcome Paul - I was also thinking that very hot temperatures may also be playing a part - I know it can suppress laying so possibly that also played a part.

All the best
