I have 2 hens, we've had them since they were 5 weeks old. They're now just over 6 months. One of them (Hurley) has always been stand offish and a loner. The other one (Kate) was always very friendly, loves being held, good with kids. As of this week suddenly she's gotten mean, I was out visiting them and she bit me hard enough to leave a mark. Is this normal adult hen behavior? Neither have laid eggs yet and they're both buff orpington.

Mine dont act that way.. Well accept one deleware bit my husband twice for bugging here while laying in the dirt lol. But it could be, my next question is if she went out of her way to attack you or if it was just she was laying down and then did so?

When you handle chickens a lot they think of you as part of the flock, your hen is becoming sexually mature, she is getting moody and is probably trying to dominate you, I would probably ignore her if she comes up too boldly, hopefully she will calm down in a month or so after she starts laying. You will probably start to see her comb enlarge and get redder, and she will continue to be a bit moody, think of her like a teenage girl.

She comes right up to me when I walk out and starts biting my clothes and hands if I reach for her

That makes sense, thank you!
