First time duck owner

Is it normal for a pekin not to fly? I put this make shift child gate up the other day to keep my big birds in the coop while i was cleaning! It was raining and i didnt want them to go bk out for awhile! They were talking about what I had done i think! Lol! Neither of them can fly so it works perfectly!
Most Pekins can't fly. For all of my ducks, 12" chicken wire will keep them penned in a certain area. They could hop and fly over it, I am sure, but they don't know that, and have never expended the extra energy to try :) Anything over shoulder level will keep the lazy ones in a room :)
That's cool. We have had our WH'S in 2 dog exercise pens hooked together that are only 36"high for months now. Only a couple times when I was in the pen with the door open did a couple of them wander out, but only just to the other side, so it was easy to herd them back inside. I don't know if this breed flies or not. None of mine have ever tried. The more I see of the Pekins on here, the more I like them:)

WH can't fly either. My two WH girls haven't even tried. They will run while flapping their wings, but have never gotten an inch of air :) Out of my Pekin, WH, Runners and KC, the only duck to ever get any air was the Khaki Campbell, and it was only because he was across the yard - and I had meal worms :)

That's good to know bc I thought someone here had said WH do fly:)

Mine will get maybe a few inches off the ground if spooked.

I know - my girls have what I affectionately call "junk in the trunk" :)

Hahaha! So true...that's why I call these 2 my big birds! Lol! They're definitely "all about that bass"! Haha! My new game rooster is caged but chick pea checks him out! He will ruffle his feathers up and stand tall at her and she will ruffle hers up and stand tall bk at him but she stands a few inches taller and is much wider! It's hilarious!! It's like she's sayin "Boy! Don't get cocky with me...I'll put ya down!" Lol!
