Hello!! We have 8 Australorps and 2 of them are looking suspiciously like roos. All of the girls have their feathers on the head, but Willow and Lilac still have tufts of fluff on their head. Their tails are quite pointy compared to the girls. Their combs are not that large but a little bigger than the others. Is there a positive way to tell or should we wait till their saddle feathers come in? Thank you!

You should be able distinguish male from female australorps by the time they are 6 to 8 weeks old. The comb on the males should begin to turn reddish by then. I've also noticed that female australorps tend to have pointy tails when they're young (at least mine did), which can throw you off when trying to sex them.

Two of my australorps looked different to the third (more pointy in the tail). I was convinced they were boys right up until they started laying :)

Hello! Here are some pictures.

The top pic is of willow. In the second pic, the chick on the right is maybe a roo? They both have very pointy tails copared to some a the others. Their tails are also very upright. Their combs are not that big. Thank you! This is of one of the girls.

Nothing that's screaming rooster, yet. I had one pullet that was always standing more upright than my cockerel.

They all look like pullets to me. At 6 weeks you can get a fairly good idea of the gender. Of course, there could be some exceptions, but the chances are good that they are all girls.

Yep, they look like pullets; BAs have pointier tails than other breeds, I've noticed, so that could be throwing you off, but I don't see any roo feathering or red combs or growing wattles, so safe bet on pullets :)
