Hi from Rockton, IL

Welcome to BYC! :frow Glad you joined.

I saw you mentioned that you had insulation when you listed your building supplies for your coop. I think the vast majority of folks would advise against insulation in a coop.

I don't know what zone you live in but I'm in zone 5, upstate NY. I did not use insulation. I DID use DLM and LOTS of ventilation with options to close off large windows when needed. Haven't gone through my first winter yet so we'll see.

I would advise you also to look into DLM as that would affect your coop design if you think it is the right thing for you. There are lots of articles both on BYC and elsewhere that list the many benefits of using DLM for your flock.

And last of all, you haven't started building that coop yet. Take LOTS of pictures along the way and of the finished product and write an article! I'm certain it would be an invaluable tool for someone else looking to build a new coop. And with you using barnwood... well, it'll probably come out just gorgeous to boot!

I was also overwhelmed by the coop options/ideas. But until you jump in and do it, you'll never know what works best for you. I'll be doing a shed to coop conversion late winter and can't wait to get started! It appears I've been smacked in the face with a chicken math ruler and must now adapt my chicken's abode. :)

Hello all!
Bumping an old thread, I know... I’m relocating to Rockton, IL, from Kentucky and was hoping the OP was still on here. I’d like to hear how her chickens do in the winter and what she ended up with for a coop.

Hi and welcome to BYC :frow We're so happy you've decided to join us :ya
