Three hens in one nest box

When I put my nest boxes up, I worried that they weren't big enough and that a hen might feel a bit cramped.  I have fairly large breeds (2 BR, 2 RIR, 2 BO, 4 EE).  Well, looks like there was no need for worry because this morning I walked into the coop to find THREE of them crammed into a single nest!  I have four nests for them to choose from, but this one has always been the favorite.  I just hope the eggs end up in the box and not on the floor since it looks like two fluffy butts are hanging over the edge!

that is toooo funny!  i have 4 girls but only 2 are laying and i have caught both of them in the same box.  if the other 2 uses it as well, we might be dealing with some cramped spaces here.  cute picture!

Lol! That's adorable! Cuddle time! Maybe they got chilly! My BFF has alot more chickens than i do and hers will wait for one of the hens that r setting to get up and another hen will hop in her nest and lay an egg in it and bolt so the setting hen will raise her young! It's too funny! The poor hen will be setting on so many eggs they barely fit under her bottom!

One of the girls gave up and moved to a different nest box to lay, but I was happy to see that one of Barred Rocks laid her first egg in the crowded box.  She had a lot of moral support from her flock mates :)  Only four of my girls have started laying out of 10, so its still thrilling to go out and find eggs everyday.  These forums have been a great source of information and entertainment for this new chicken owner!

Haha! I found 2 in the same nesting bin the other day. They seem to like to lay side by side. It WAS my extra straw bin, until Ghost (my leghorn) claimed it as hers and I just caved. This is Brownie (golden sex link) and Orpi (buff orpington) in it together the other day with Mily Way contemplating jumping in too (cuckoo cochin), just before they laid down and both laid. Today I went out and there were 2 in the bin again, but I don't know whether they laid at the same time or not because I was out running errands for 6hrs ugh:
