I just received my Rhode Island Red chicks today. I'll be keeping two and three will be going to a friend. Since the shading is different on the little girls I am not sure how to pick which ones to keep. Is there any rhyme or reason to their beginning colors? Of course I bought them for eggs but I also would like pretty girls. :D Any insight would be wonderful.

I don't think it matters what color they are as chicks. The darker ones may grow into a dark red (almost brown), and the lighter ones will probably be reddish brown. Hope this helps you!

P.S. Your chicks are sooooo cute!

Thank you! I am way too new at this to be choosing which ones. I also bought some Ameraucana (from Ideal) and was told they're Easter Egger. Not sure which of the two I should keep with them either. Believe me I wish I could keep them all but I did promise them to someone....LOL! I can't have any roosters in my backyard and it's so difficult to decide.

The one on the right doesn't have a beard, and has brown undertones. The one on the right does have the beard and is pretty much black, white with only a slight touch of brown in a couple of spots.

Both birds are almost 10 weeks old.
