She just disappeared?

I've seen them take both robins and orchard orioles not 50 feet from where i was watching. The hawk literally did a tap dance on small prey birds to make them more agreeable to becoming hawk chow. In 5 seconds it was over except for breaking out the leaf blower to clean up the mess of feathers left behind.

In my misspent youth i surprised my fair share of darters by hiding in an empty chicken pen with the door open and coming out like a one man SWAT team when the hawk made its appearance.
I can imagine that!

Was thinking about this...and wonder if maybe she just got stuck somewhere out in the yard.
Always drives me nuts not having an answer, but sometimes there just isn't one.
Hope you can figure it out and how not to have it happen again. Hang in there.
I looked around everywhere and she is nowhere to be found ): I also thought that at first.. But all my trees are pretty low and she;d be able to hop back down. There is nowhere she can be stuck ):
Too young for release without adult defenders and even adult silkies will not be effective defenders. Keep the silkies penned up unless under very direct supervision.
They are usually cooped up but on this one day I let them out and at first watched them for a good two hours before remembering my essay.. so I made the fatal mistake of going back in for a bit. I'll never make it again ):
My very own barn cat has killed 4-5 month old silkies, took them over a 5 foot fence, and left nothing but the head on my porch, a good 50+ feet away. Dog never raised a fuss, cause it was just the cat......
I'm starting to think it was a cat and not a hawk. I've honestly never seen a hawk anywhere near here but you never know.. The thing is, I had other one's out that one day at the time. Do cats kill more than one or just take one?
I was so happy for the rain!!!!!!!! LOVED the weather yesterday! It was beautiful (':
I know! We need a save the lakes campaign here. So many are almost dry while the water goes to water acres of lawns put in for decoration. This is why our lawn takes no grass and has drought resistant plants. Our only grasses are barely watered and take up a tiny percentage of our property. Then they are watering the golf course several times a day and people ask why the lake is so low. Clueless.
We are also on water conservation and can only water the lawn on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Are we allowed to water our plants? We've been barely watering them and things are slowly dying. What about all the people taking baths? Or people with leaky faucets/spouts/etc.? No idea either.
I don't want to hijack the OP, but she's surely feeling out drought too! Did you read the news about the millions of balls they released in the reservoirs to slow evaporation? We have WMWD. They must only allot a gallon a day before they rake in the penalties! I am SO water wise. My bill is 300+ per month for fees penalties and nonsense. Pray for El Nino!
You guys aren't hijacking me! I don't mind speaking about this godawful drought! So sorry about your bill ): I really hope we get more rain! And I did not look that up until you mentioned it and it was linked below!
Didn't hear about the ball thing...where is that happening? Sorry op, don't mean to hijack the thread, just can't help myself. Did you find any clues on your predator?
Don't worry about it! And as mentioned above, I believe it is a cat now!
So cool! The article says it holds 3 billion gallons which would only last LA... three weeks. Put into consideration how much water everyone uses daily. I really hope this rain continues although today it's sunny where I am!

My cat only took one at a time. It just took me a while to realize I was missing birds, and then to realize who was doing it. The dog keeps everyone else away, and I never thought my cat would take a bird that age. I think it was because the silkies are so unwary, I've never lost any other breed over about 6 weeks to a cat.

Yeah.. I'm sure it was a cat now. There was no evidence around, right? It's like they just disappeared?! I don't have cats so I didn't find any heads around here. I believe it's the neighbors cat? Although I've never seen any cats around here but my dog does randomly bark along the wall and bark at "something" in the neighbors yard behind mine. I know it's not a dog because I've never heard one at all!

I keep thinking cat too. Could you set a humane trap and see what you catch? One day in a cat trap in your yard should go a long way toward curing the cat. Yes, a cat would grab it and take it home. I still think the disco ball will be helpful. Wild birds carry so many diseases. LOL @donrae refering to silkies as "unwary" I've never owned them, but have heard several descriptive adjectives used to speak to their lack of genius! Unwary was so kind.

I was picturing @chickengeorgeto leaping out of a coop! Way too funny! We ALL four did that the day the hawk swooped in here. We were under the bar awning so it hadn't seen us.
Water bill: WMWD is killing us. We have a community FB page where we've been posting the charges. Folks in tract housing are also paying ridiculous bills. I did finally get approved for an increase to my tier one for the 2 horses. It's not like I can stop providing fresh water to them.
Did you ever finish your roosts?
