Worried about my Rhode Island Red

She is acting normal....still eating, making noises, running around etc. her feathers have been getting a little thinner on her chest and I looked today and underneath the very little feathers she had its bare skin. What is causing that? She is still pretty young to be molting

Hi! :frow If you don't think she's old enough to be molting, she's likely not broody either. Has she been acting broody at all? Sometimes a hen will pick their own feathers for a nest. Lice or mites might be a cause. Do any of your other birds have any similar issues?  here's a link to research that possibility.

Dust bathing in an irritant? Is there any redness? If you rule out a cause, some folks seem very pleased with feather fixer feeds to improve feathering. You could always post a picture as well. Best of luck!

I do not see any redness and I do not see and live or mites. None of my other hens are doing this. I have one (a different breed) who just finished molting but she is a couple years older than this one. I mean she's still lying eggs and eating and messing with everything like she always does. It's only on her chest. I'll try to get a picture. I've had them on the same layer feed since I've had them. Any other options you could think of? She's maybe a year old now. Would she be molting now if the other one I have same as her isn't?

They don't molt the first year, typically 16 mos give or take. She's not dust or mud bathing anywhere with an irritant? Nothing irritating in the nest box? Good quality feed...,If she's bright eyed and bushy tailed, I'd just keep an eye. Possibly someone else will have more suggestions. Keep us posted?

No I haven't seen her doing that. I keep their coop really clean. Yes it is really good quality feed. She doesn't really look to bushy tailed....she looks normal like she usually does except her chest. It's not completely bald but when you look under the little feathers that are there is just skin. Not many feathers.

I really wouldn't worry. You're a good chicken momma.
