This is our first time owning guineas, and we don't know how to tell if it is a male or female. It is 5 weeks old.

Yes, please post on the guinea thread. The only time I've been close to one - is at the zoo. I never noticed any difference between them.

From what I recall, the way to sex guinea fowl is by their call... females have the really loud 'buck-wheat' call and males are quieter 'chatterers'...

This is the only realistic way to sex them, you need to wait until they start making noise then listen...

There are some people that claim to be able to sex them by looks and size of waddles/crest but that is mostly just a guess in the end... I take any such sight claims with a grain of salt, yeah generally the males have bigger cupped waddles and larger crest but that is only a generalization not a conclusive fact... For some breeders depending on their flocks genetics it might hold true more often then not and they can sex by looks pretty well, but I have a strong feeling that if tested outside their flocks genetics their chances of sexing as accurate would fail...

I have females that have larger crest and larger waddles then some of my males so I know those traits alone are not conclusive...
