I was grooming one of my hens today. When I got to her vent I noticed she had a bunch of mites running around there. But every week since I got my flock (8 weeks ago) I've given them a dust bath mixed with wood ash, DE, and chinchilla dust (friend had a heap of it left after her chinchilla passed away so I thought it would be useful). Yet she and a few others have mites.
I change the hay weekly. Should I change it more often?
Am I doing something wrong?

Welcome! You need to treat the mites with something that actually works. Permethrin dust is approved for use in poultry and will kill the mites. WEAR A N95 or better dust mask when you dust the chickens, and also dust or spray the coop after cleaning it out. Ivermectin works well on the birds, but isn't approved for use, although I use it anyway. Mites and lice will turn up occasionally because the wild birds carry them in to your flock. UGH! But that's the way it is. Mary
