I have been raising my adorable chickens since mid-April and have been thoroughly enjoying it. Today I cut a cucumber in half and just watched the girls attack it in delight. Chicken-raising has been fun.
If I could give myself advice back in April it would be to R-E-L-A-X. I remember many nights waking up in the middle of the night to check on the brooder to ensure a proper temperature, I scoured the internet because of new sounds coming from the chicks, I would check the nesting boxes 4x a day starting at 18 weeks until one finally laid an egg at week 20. This has been a true joy raising those chicky-poos and I have used BYC on numerous occasions to look at forums to answer some of my questions. Today I decided to actually join the community to get my questions answered and to communicate with the same hobby.
Now if only I could get my neighbor's horses to stop picking at my coop, we'll be all set! See my thread here: http://www.backyardchickens.com/t/1025119/how-to-keep-horses-away-from-coop
I look forward to getting to know you all, your own chicky-poos, and to talk about mine!
