Ok, my hen frazzle is really, truly broody, as in pecked out her breast feathers and is sleeping on the nest all day and night. Plus she tries to kill me if I stick my hand in the nest box. And it's ok to let her hatch out chicks in the winter, right?
I have this small two-hen coop that I got for Christmas. My parents got it for me as an area for a broody hen. The only problem is that there are two nest boxes, and I'm afraid that if she gets off the nest and eats that when she comes back she will sit in the wrong nest box. So, should I block off a nest, or should I leave it and hope for the best?
Also, In a week I will be going to check out a local breeder, and she has seramas. My hen is a cochin bantam, and seems careful with her eggs(she hatched two clutches of chicks already, 3 of the 8 being cochin bantam crosses). I was going to ask the lady if I could buy some cochin bantam, silkie, and serama hatching eggs from her, but I'm afraid the serama eggs will be too small. Plus it's very cold here right now, so I dont know if that's a good choice. Should I wait to get serama chicks from her in the summer?
Does she belong to BYC? I'd love to be able to see pictures of her serama. And how much she charges for serama eggs, chicks, or adult serama. A name and e-mail address or phone # would be good too. PM if you wish. It would be really nice to be able to buy from a local rather than have eggs shipped in from another state far away. She lives about 10-15 minutes away from me. I don't know if you know where county road k is, but she lives on a side road off of k. I'm guessing she uses heat lamps, but I'm not sure. Ill know on Sunday though. She breeds lots of other bantam and LF breeds. Plus turkey, some ducks. She might also raise some geese and I think she may have mentioned a type of swan???? I forget. This was last month when I talked to her. So yeah...I don't really know much else. I know she does some rare-ish colors; as in you can't buy them at commercial hatcheries. Like buff barred and red barred Cochin bantams and lavender orpingtons.
