Can Anyone Tell Me What's Wrong With My Hen?

Hello!

I'm hoping one of you more experienced chicken owners can help me.  I've only had chickens for about 18 months and this is the first problem we've had (thankfully).

One of my hens is almost completely bald on her underside.  The skin is red and irritated looking.  She is eating and active, but it looks raw and red (the pictures are not as red as she really is). This is her belly not her vent area although the raggedy looking feathers are near her vent.

None of the other hens (I have four, total) has this problem.  This girl is not at the bottom of the pecking order so I don't think she's being bullied.  Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated!

TIA!

Hi! :frow I would rule out lice or mites first. If you have ruled out lice or mites, looked very carefully and are certain there are no bugs, she going broody? Sometimes a broody hen will pick her feathers. At 18 months, she could be molting. That "typically" starts on the back though. Hope  you get more ideas. Keep us posted.

One of my hens had a naked belly while back.  I feared she had mites, but was told by a vet that hens will pull out their belly feathers if they're feeling maternal, as in broody.  They remove the feathers so that their bare skin can sit on top of the eggs.  My hen never actually went as far as becoming broody and eventually the feathers grew back.  I don't recall that her skin was very pink or red at the time though, maybe a little pink and the skin was a little bumpy looking which I think is just what chicken skin looks like. When I was asking around last time most people said it was probably mites so that is a possibility, just wanted to mention my experience in case you have no signs of mites.  Might be something perfectly normal. :)

No apology needed! You were spot on in your suggestions and it's very helpful to a poster to see more than one person with the same thought. That helps rule in the most popular thoughts.
