Our first chicks: 2, 8 wk old white silky bantam hens

Hi,

Dp calls me Grumpy. I am his maternal Grandfather, and with my wife Nana, we are his legal guardians. He is a 12 year old Autistic with low verbal skills. This can cause him frustrations and times of dissregulation that can often lead him to unsafe behaviors. So he lives in a residence and comes for home visits every other weekend. This past weekend we took him and two supporting staff with us to an agricultural fair. When preparing him by phone earlier in the week, he had mentioned baby chickens. I encouraged him that we could see some, and started to engage him in listing all the different animals that he'd see. He once spent a lot of time playing minecraft, which has caused him to have an interest in cows. Back to the chicks, when we got to fair he asked to take chicks home. After a short discussion, since he was cooperating well in a crowded setting, we conceded and showed him some 2 month old white silky bantams. He asked for a rooster, we declined. I only have a dog, because I found one that did not bark much. So we came home with two hens that he has named, with Nana's help, Rachael and Denise. On the way home we saw what appears to be a rabbit hutch offered free on the side of he road. It is perfect for temp use on our front porch until a coop is built. It is about 6 square feet of floor space, 2/3 of which has  wire sides and lid. I went to the Farmers Union the next day and picked up some supplies: wood shavings, quart size water and feeding jars, crumble, and heat lamp. Nana thinks that chickens need to be kept warm. She is learning slowly, and will have big uptake in the learning curve, once that electric bill arrives. I have a roll of wire fence and steel posts from our last place of residence, from a play yard we had for dp. We just hope the girls will last the winter, and be able to lay a daily egg come spring. Nana has no plans of any expansion in the future. She says this is her limit. If I do all the cleaning as often as she feels is required, we may just have to see what the future does hold.;)

That's great that you and your grandson are getting into chickens. I enjoyed reading your introduction on how it all came about. You might want to take a look at this article written by one of our wonderful members, @Blooie, on how her grandchildren relate to the chickens:

I wish you all the luck with the silkies and if you have any questions, please feel free to ask. There are a lot of helpful members here to lend a helping hand.

Hello frow.gif and welcome to BYC!

Sounds like a good plan,  that only thing that might" fowl" you up is, silkies are extremely difficult to sex before 4-5 mos. of age and sometimes not till they crow or lay an egg. The people selling the silkies  probably didn't have any idea either.  So that is something to think about. If you had to re-home a cockerel or two - it would be quite an upheaval  for  your grandson.

:flHope they will both be girls
