I recently picked up these two girls. They are about 13 weeks old. They are both supposed to be golden laced Wyandottes. As you can see from the pictures, one is much lighter gold and the other one is darker. Is it normal for them to vary like this? The man I got them from said they were both golden laced Wyandotte's, one was just a lighter shade. Do they vary in how light or dark the gold is? I like them both either way, but just curious. Here are the pictures. Thanks in advance!

The lighter bird would be considered poor quality as far as breeding, as her color is off from the desired lacing and color. She may well be pure Wyandotte, but either from a hatchery or a small breeder who does not maintain lines for good lacing.

As far as backyard birds, she'll be wonderful. color doesn't effect egg laying, and Wyandottes are good layers and nice backyard birds.

X2 on the above.)

Thanks for the info! Funny, with me not knowing much about what is desired or bred for in this breed, I was thinking the lighter one would be considered the nicer one! I really just like the fact that I can quickly look and easily tell them apart!

You're welcome.

Actually, I like the lighter one better - it's stands out. If you don't intend to breed for show, etc. I think she is beautiful.
