In all fairness, in the first picture, you couldn't tell he was a bantam. When pictured side-by-side with the other boy, it was clear that the dark one is bantam sized.

 It would be great if you have a helper that could hold the birds closer to the camera.  Would they stay put, if you had them perched on something.?  OR if you could borrow a camera  with a telephoto lens  - the very best way to get close ups on skittish birds.  Even the cheaper point and shoot cameras come with some amount of tele.
