Howdy from Kentucky

BYC does a breed focus every couple of weeks on a different breed. Last month the breed focus was on the Rhode Island Red, it was interesting to read about members experiences with the breed and the difference between "true" RIR vs. production reds. You might like to read this since that's what you are going to have:

I've had 2 RIR's in my mixed flock and have been very pleased with them. Both with their temperament and their egg-laying ability. I hope you enjoy yours as much as I have mine!

Well, my starter flock has arrived! I was surprised how small the box was, then how small the chicks were.

My youngest checking out the new flock. I used a large cardboard box as an improvised brooder.

They're so cute!

I have a dumb question, should I give them the crumbles right away, or do they just need to be on the nutrient/electrolyte water for a while? I remember reading something about that, but now I can't figure out where.

Give them the crumbles right away, you may need to pick them up one at a time and dip their beaks in the feed to get them started. Once one of them starts eating, the others will follow.

Cute chicks!

And remember...the only dumb question is the one you don't ask. Everyone was new to this at some point so feel free asking any questions you have.
