I just bought three chicken off craigslist, 2 faverolles and 1 cuckoo maran. I got them home and inspected them and guess what -- mites all over them. The cuckoo maran is only 11 weeks old. The other two are 4 months. I've treated them all with poultry dust as well as then pen. Will treat again in a few days. I've successfully treated mites before so am pretty sure I can handle the mite issue However, one of the faverolles eye is shut and has a broken beak -- just a little off the front. The eye doesn't appear to be swollen and she open it occasionally. From what I've read, the beak should grow back just fine. The eye I'm not to sure what to do. One thing I read was to treat with neosporin. Any other suggestions.

We just built a new coop for our existing three girls so we have a separate coop that we can keep the new chickens in until they are well. I bought the new girls off craigslist. I've bought off craiglist before with no problem, but not this time. I have no intention on returning them to this guy -- I couldn't put them back into those conditions. I am pretty sure I can nurse them back to health. I wish there was some way of warning people not to buy from this guy. At any rate, any suggestions on the eye issue would be appreciated.

Thanks!

Hello and well done on the 'rescue'!

I have seen some people post on CL about defective goods etc. warning other people off. I believe if you put a post on the same area you spotted the chickens - it might help others.
Anyway, the eye. Warm water compresses 2-3 x day, Neosporin - that's all I would do for now and see how it works out. Good luck with the mites - they are persistent little buggers - must have a really bad infestation to actually live on the birds....

.....keep us posted!

Thanks! I will try the compress and the neosporin. It's been two days and they all look really good. Combs and face are starting to turn pink -- they were all extremely pale when I got them. They are acting like normal chickens so I am hopefull they will all three make a full recovery!
